Hair Loss: What is Normal and What is Not?

Do you ever think you are losing your hair?  I think as a woman one of my biggest fears is losing my hair.  But what is normal and when do I know that I need to do something?

We lose anywhere from 100 to 300 hairs a day.  As we shed these little hairs get tangled and connected to the hairs that we have not lost. When we remove our hair ties, brush or wash our hair suddenly we have a hand full of hair and we freak out!   Don’t worry this is normal and the longer the hair, and the less you shampoo, the more likely you will see large amounts of these little guys.

We also may see large changes in hair thickness during different stages of our lives.  Pregnancy, weight loss, stress medications or hormonal changes can also play a role in the density of our hair.

What to watch out for:  seeing more scalp than normal isn’t normal if none of the above is a factor.  Large spots void of any hair is also an issue.

For women there are several things that we can do to protect the health of our hair.

We style our hair more often than men and use many more hot tools.  Not to mention we pull our hair up in clips, color several times a year and are often trying lots of crazy hair care products because we love the way the smell!

All these processes take a toll on our scalps as well as our hair.

SO, what can you do? First, and most importantly, keep a routine with your stylist.  We will know when things are shifting and changing with your hair.  If you bounce around from person to person, it is difficult for us to pinpoint when something needs to be addressed.

Also, just because it smells good or it’s for color treated hair, does not mean that that shampoo is great for you.   I find that 90 percent of the time most of my client’s issues are due to using the wrong hair care.

A small investment of money on prescribed hair care from a professional stylist can save you hours of time styling, as well as address many health concerns with your hair.

We are not doctors, but we do know a thing or two about your hair so trust us and go all in, it will pay off in the end!

Do you have scalp issues or any of the hormonal changes that I have talked about in this blog?  Here is a list of some amazing products that I would recommend… But be sure to consult your “stylist” because they always know best!

Kevin Murphy Balancing Wash: Full of botanicals that are great for daily cleansing (for you over shampooers).

Kevin Murphy Stimulate Me Wash and Rinse: With Bergamot and black pepper to help energize the hair and scalp.

Kevin Murphy Thick Again: Ginger Root Nettle helps strengthen the hair at the root to prevent breakage and thicken the hair.

The Perfect Summer Facial

At Harbour Club our go-to facial for warmer weather is the Yon-Ka Hydralessence treatment. This one hour intensely hydrating, refreshing facial works to control the effects of extreme moisture loss. Perfect for pre and post sun, it prepares and repairs for a lasting sun-kissed radiance. This high-performance treatment will quickly help to rehydrates skin and restore its balance, suppleness, and softness. A feeling you can not only feel but see.

This treatment is unlike other Yon-Ka facials in that it uses two intensely nourishing masks. The powerfully softening action of seaweed and fruit extracts give your skin a moisture surge of hydration. We recommend as a treatment course: once a week for a month (4 facials) and for routine care: once a month.

If your skin is dry or parched from too much sun, too much wind, or too much stress, we have the perfect quencher to re-hydrate you!

What Is Thai Massage?

Thai massage is also sometimes called Thai-Yoga because the massage therapist guides your body through a series of yoga poses while applying gentle pressure to your muscles in a manner that enables the recipient to relax. When the client is relaxed and the stretches are received passively, the muscles can be stretched more deeply. That means you get the best of both worlds — the strength, flexibility, and relaxation benefits of yoga, as well as the tissue-stimulating benefits of a pressure-based massage therapy session.

When engaged in sporting activities, our body is subjected to continuous and sometimes excessive efforts, which can lead to pain in the muscles and joints, as well as an overall feeling of fatigue. Thai massage can be received both before sport performances, to prepare the body for the physical and mental effort thus reducing the risk of injury and after to facilitate fast recovery, accelerate the cooling down and relieve muscular tension.

During a Thai massage many muscles are stretched simultaneously, and the stretches tend to be multi-planar, which means each stretch moves the muscles in more than just one direction. Multi-planar stretches prepare the muscles better for everyday activities than stretches that are isolating or uni-directional.

By the client passively receiving a series of stretches and compressions there is a loosening of stiff joints. The muscles and tendons stretch gradually, increasing their flexibility and endurance, easing tensions and giving a feeling of physical and mental wellbeing. Energy circulation is improved by loosening muscles that commonly tighten and restrict the flow of blood, nerves, oxygen, and other vital energy.

Doing Our Part to Reduce Waste in the Salon & Spa Industry

At Harbour Club we pride ourselves in providing an eco-conscious service and product offering.

You won’t find paper towels in our restrooms – we have individual wash cloths for you to dry your hands with.  Some say that washing cloth must be more energy-intensive than using paper, but electric dryers are twice as energy-efficient as the manufacture of paper towels.

Our hair care line, Kevin Murphy, is committed to reducing plastic in an amazing way by cleaning up our oceans and reclaiming that plastic to package their hair products. The bottles are made from 100% recycled ocean plastics to create a circular supply chain. In doing so, they will be the first ever beauty brand to implement this practice, which will save over 360 tons of new plastic each year! The recycled bottles will begin debuting globally mid-2019.

Starting April 23rd, 2019, we will be starting a refill station for the Kevin Murphy Hydrating Wash and Rinse, as well as the Kevin Murphy Angel Wash and Rinse. When you refill your previously purchased KM bottle, you’ll receive 10% off purchase!

Our skincare line, Yon-Ka, takes a stand for sustainable development when it comes to their packaging. Yon-Ka uses cardboard from trees that are managed and handled in a sustainable manner by a Swedish company, which is one of the 100 most sustainably oriented companies in the world, according to the rating of the United Nations Worldwide pact.

Yon-Ka elects to not use any endangered plants, vegetables or food resources that are essential to local populations in their ingredients.

In addition, Yon-Ka helps sponsor the implementations of beehives with the Association “Un Toit pour les Abeilles” (A Shelter for Bees”), in order to help support bees’ populations and combat the alarming loss of pollinating insects.

Our makeup line, Jane Iredale, has earned ECOCERT’s Natural and Organic Cosmetics certification for their hydration sprays including POMMISST, Balance and D2O. Each refreshing and uplifting spray has been reformulated and repackaged to comply with ECOCERT’s certification standards while retaining essential features, benefits and key ingredients of its unique original formula. ECOCERT strives to promote the use of ingredients derived from renewable resources and organic farming in addition to using production and manufacturing processes that are environmentally sound and safe for human health. To earn certification products must be comprised of a minimum of 95 percent ingredients of natural origin, and a minimum of 5-10 percent ingredients from organic farming.

ECOCERT certifies that Jane Iredale POMMISST, Balance and D2O Hydration Sprays meet and exceed this standard. The Hydration Sprays are 100 percent natural and 30 percent organic, and the products’ sourcing, manufacturing and packaging have minimal effect on the environment.

Did you know that all Jane Iredale makeup trays can be removed from the compact and replaced with refills? This includes the “Pure Pressed Mineral Foundation” and “Beyond Matte”! Simply turn the compact over and you will see a little hole near the hinge. Poke the hole with a paperclip to pop out the old makeup tray and replace it with a new refill. The packaging of “Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer”, ” Smooth Affair Facial Primer” and “Glow Time BB Cream” are all recyclable! When you’ve finally reached the bottom of your foundation, and are ready to replace it, be sure to recycle your empty bottles.

From the product brands we partner with, to the materials used for services, we are always thinking earth friendly!

Facial Massage: An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure

One of the most beneficial components of a facial is the massage. Facial and neck massage restore the skin’s radiance and prevent wrinkles by toning the muscles and firming the skin. Results that can be achieved are contouring of the cheeks, minimizing of smile and laugh lines, and a more defined jaw-line, to name a few.

When we age, it’s a slowing in the circulation of nutrient-rich blood and detoxifying lymph and increasingly sluggish skin-cell turnover. A facial massage enhances blood and lymph circulation, which improves the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the cells. This maximizes the health condition of the cells and in turn keeps your complexion’s tissues in constant repair.

Face massage is a healthy, and less expensive, alternative to invasive treatments like Botox (facial paralyzer). When Botox is used for long periods of time without a break, facial muscles may waste away as a result of the degeneration of cells. When the skin is massaged properly, we release tension, blockages in the muscles, skin, and fascia.

Facial massage, like any other toning exercise, needs to be performed regularly for it to be effective. From age prevention to age correction, this technique is used in every Yonka facial we offer here at Harbour Club!

The Rise of Green Beauty

You’ve probably seen within the last few years a huge increase in healthy makeup options. Jane Iredale cosmetics was the pioneer of green beauty and she’s set the standard that hasn’t been met. Iredale mineral cosmetics was founded in 1994 and became the first full makeup line on the market to offer not just coverage, but also benefits to the skin.

Jane Iredale multitasking mineral makeup products are high-performance natural ingredients including liposomes, stem cells and peptides. Free of parabens, talc, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, GMO ingredients. There are no nano-size minerals in any product. All Jane Iredale products are certified cruelty free by Leaping Bunny and eco friendly. This makeup line checks all the boxes!

Jane Iredale is above and beyond most cosmetics in that they’re categorized as pharmaceutical grade. This means all of their
products are 99.9% pure ingredients. This high quality level of ingredients must contain 0.1%, or less, of bacteria. Only 5% of the entire skin care industry can meet such high standards to be considered Pharmaceutical Grade.

You’ve probably heard people say, “If you take better care of your skin, you won’t feel a need for makeup”. With Jane Iredale makeup you have the benefits of skincare with a holistic approach to healthy cosmetics. The SPF products are recommended and approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation as effective broad spectrum sunscreen. Most makeup lines are not trustworthy when it comes to sun protection. Touching up your SPF during the day is a breeze with the Powder-Me SPF 30. It protects against UVB/UVA rays and is water resistant for up 40 minutes. This powder also calms inflammation! Because no talc is used in any of the products you’ll notice a significant difference in the way the powders are not drying. The minerals actually trap moisture between the skin and the particle layer.

If you’ve been searching for the perfect healthy, nontoxic, hypoallergenic cosmetic line that will give a flawless look- I guarantee you’ve found your match with Jane Iredale.

The Secret To Naturally Gorgeous Lashes

A Lash Lift & Tint is a treatment that gives the appearance of longer, thicker lashes and youthfully opens up the eye area. Any length of lashes can be enhanced!

A Lash Lift & Tint is an amazing low maintenance alternative to lash extensions and perfect for no- makeup days like the beach & gym.

To begin the treatment your esthetician will apply an eye shield, covering your lower lashes. Your top lashes are then temporarily glued to a silicone rod chosen specifically for your eye shape and lash length. After your lashes are precisely positioned the first lifting solution is applied. Once the first solution has processed and been removed, the second setting lotion is applied. The solutions never touch your skin.

When the lashes have been lifted the final step is tinting with a vegetable-based dye. This is when the magic happens as your lashes are given the look of wearing mascara. Black is the most common choice, but we also offer dark brown.

For the first 24 hours post treatment you’ll want to be gentle with your lashes and avoid rubbing them, stay away from steam & saunas, and not wear any mascara.

This treatment takes about 45-60 minutes from start to finish and the results can last 6-8 and even 12 weeks.

2019 Hair Trends

New Year, New Hair!

2019 is here and we are so excited to see what new hair trends this year will bring! 2018 brought us a lot of beach waves, ashy blondes and of course the always popular balayage.

Living near the coast we have a lot of clients who love the balayage look. Balayage is a highlighting technique in which the dye is painted on instead of using foils like in classic highlights. This technique is great because it creates a low maintenance blonde that only needs to be touched up every two to three months, as opposed to traditional highlights that need maintenance every six weeks.  This past year we saw a lot of clients transitioning from highlights to balayage because of easy upkeep and we suspect this is going to be a popular trend for the new year.

Looking forward into 2019 there are three main trends that keep popping up in our research… creamy toned blondes, bobs and sleek updos.

Creamy Toned Blondes

Like we said earlier, 2018 was all about the grey and ash tones, which are gorgeous, but this year is going to be all about the neutral and cream tones! While ash tones are beautiful, they don’t always look great on everyone. Golden and neutral shades work on all skin tones and give you a more natural look.  For our brunette beauties, add some dimension with a few face framing, copper balayage highlights.

The best way to start off the new year is with some new hair! If your hair is straight a blunt, jawline bob is the perfect way to accentuate your face shape. For our curly headed ladies, a longer “lob” or shoulder length cut will be the perfect way to keep your curls under control while rocking a shorter cut.

Sleek Updos

Did you know that the holiday season is the most popular time of year for engagements? Since New Year’s Eve, our email has been going crazy with inquiries from brides about our 2019 hair and makeup availability! In 2018 we saw a lot of brides going with the “braided, boho” look, however many of this year’s brides have sent us a lot of “pinspirations” featuring more classic looks and sleek updos.  You can’t go wrong with this elegant, timeless style! Visit the “services” tab for more information on our wedding day hair and makeup services.

The Road to Healthy Hair

If you are on the road to healthy hair or trying to maintain your healthy hair, there are some steps that you should take in order to speed up the process.

Step One: Take More Time Between Hair Coloring Appointments

We understand that seeing those pesky gray hairs or your natural color coming through can be upsetting. However, waiting at least 6 weeks for your next hair coloring appointment is ideal. If you can make it to 8, that is even better. Some easy and temporary solutions while your hair grows out would be to try a colored dry shampoo or even root touch-up markers that wash out after every shampoo. It might seem like an extra step, but your hair will thank you for it.

Step Two: Don’t Overdo It With Products

Sometimes, if your hair is limp, lifeless, and without volume, you probably have products readily available to fix that. You may think that layering on a ton of different products will help out your hair, when in fact you can’t be farther from the truth. The use of various chemicals and products make it worse for your hair to breathe and weighs down the hair even more.

Step Three: Washing your hair daily? Stop

Trying to keep your scalp and hair clean means washing it, so to make sure that there is no oil-build up and it is kept looking “fresh” you may wash it every day. That is one of the worst things you can do to your hair. Why? The oils that your scalp creates naturally is actually good for your hair, in small amounts. Stripping it of this every time you wash your hair could lead to a dry scalp and hair that can easily break. Plus the more you wash your hair, the more your scalp is going to overcompensate for that, which means even greasier hair. The solution? Wash it every 2 days at least. This will give your scalp time to hydrate and absorb the natural oils it produces.

Some people overthink how to get healthy hair, but in reality, it all comes to down to the basics. Just keep it natural. The more you add, the more you wash, the more you do to it, is actually not all that great. But something you should also keep in mind is hydration. Use a conditioner and always try to keep your hair hydrated.
